To produce all of these photo shoots I used a
Cannon DSLR camera with a 18-55mm lens.
Initial Photographs
For this photo shoot, I planned to use inspiration from David Loftus as I feel he portrayed a shoot of "breakfast" very successfully. I plan to use artificial lighting to gain reflections of light to draw attention to my images and capture as much detail as possible. I also had the idea of taking my photographs from several different angles to revive abstract pictures and make my images more effective. Also, showing a dripping effect was abstract and made the picture seem more realistic and expose a 3D effect.
Edits
I have edited these initial photographs to enhance the detail and qualities that the photo has captured. I adjusted the contrast and brightness to compliment the images individually. This also compliments the tone and shading of the shadows which then presents depth within the image. Exposing only certain colours within the photograph makes a strong effect and draws attention to the photograph.
David Loftus
David Loftus Analysis
David Loftus is an award-winning, influential and internationally acclaimed and photographs for the books of Jamie Oliver. For over 20 years, David has photographed over 100 books including all but one of Jamie Oliver’s international best-sellers.
His work is very well presented and therefor looks very professional this is a reason as to why he photographs Jamie Oliver’s food. To do this he uses artificial lighting to enhance the detail and all aspects of the food. In this particular photograph, the lighting is very bright enhancing the image and exposing the bright range of colours.
It is evident that he has taken the style of background in to consideration and it has a few darker tones and is simple so that it clearly compliments the food. The plate is clean and has no detail to compliment the detail of food and also has a good reflection of the light. This then enhances the image as a whole. Also, the image has been taken from an above angle and also doesn’t show the whole plate and shows a slight shadow beneath it, presenting a slight shadow to make it stand out. This was the reason I was attracted to this photograph and also that it has a high quality presentation.
I will use these techniques to give me inspiration in my own photography by taking my images from different viewpoints and also using angles from above to give a similar affect. I will also crop my photographs to focus on the most interesting parts of the image and capture the most detail possible.

Clare Barboza
Clare Barboza Analysis
Clare's passion lies in telling stories. She loves capturing what happens behind the scenes to bring food to our tables. Whether it's documenting a busy kitchen or a working farm. This way it means that Clare Barboza gets a range of photographs to edit and represent her work.
In this photograph the background it crisp white and very simple so the middle ground of the image stands out, highlighting the subject matter of the photograph. The colours that we see in this picture are quite bland and have a low contrast although the two red raspberries expose a bright and colourful effect to enhance the photograph. This colour against the white, compliments the image well as it becomes more realistic and eye catching.
The background of the image is out of focus to allow the middle and the foreground to stand out and expose as much detail as possible. Although the main focus is on the top of the cakes which allows us to see the detail and precision of the photograph giving it a greater and more interesting feel.
I was first attracted to this picture as it is simple but also affective with small bursts of colour. I also like the way it has been set out as the three circle shapes complement each other as they are similar sizes. I plan to use this as inspiration for my own photography as I feel It gives me a good idea of presentation to produce my own unique photographs.

Photographs
For this photo shoot inspired by Clare Barbooza, I used a Cannon DSLR camera with a 18-55mm lens. This assisted me in being able to focus on and capture the most detailed part of the image and receive an effective and interesting focal point. Throughout the photo shoot, I through about composition and feel like a achieved it well. I portrayed this by arranging and positioning the food in a way that shows angles and a variety of viewpoints. Furthermore, I have then lead to presenting depth of field where the focal point in the foreground and the background of the image is a slight blur forcing the subject matter stand out. I also wanted to achieve the effect of "rule of thirds" by having the subject matter as the most focal point with other objects around in the middle ground.
I have edited these photographs to enhance the tone, shading and the detailed components. To do this I increased the contrast and adjusted the brightness to expose shading and detail. These screenshots below demonstrate how I have edited these images to capture the detail and create a more eye catching effect to the photographs. The use of "depth of field" allows the image to come alive even further. The significant details become more prominent and capture the most interesting and effective part of the image once the contrast and brightness have been adjusted. This compliments the photos individually.
Edits
I have edited these photographs to enhance the quality of detail that I managed to capture with in the image. Editing the picture to black and white brings out the tone and shading with in the photo meaning it stands out and becomes more bold. I have demonstrated this in the screenshots above and exposed the process of how I developed these photograph. I have also increased the brightness and contrast to bring out the detail and capture the highlighted parts of the image that capture the light. Another technique is that I have cropped the photographs to capture the most interesting and effective part of the image.
Hillary Moore
Hillary Moore
Hillary Moore has had many years of experience and still going strong! Hillary still find the challenges of making everyday food look delicious, presentable and good enough to eat still continues to inspire her.
This photograph is very bright and clean which shows it is very well presented. This is assisted by artificial lighting which brings out the bright colours and highlights the reflection of light on the glazed fruit. The background of the image compliments the photograph well as it is a very light colour and slightly blurred which shows depth of field and allows the food to stand out.
The foreground of the picture seems like it stands away from the rest of the photograph as the background is out of focus and the front in circular. Revealing the edges of the photo.
The photograph has been taken off centre and the subject of the image is slightly to the right. This enhances the image in the way that it allows the food to stand out away from the background creating a more eye catching effect.
I was first attracted to this photograph because it it’s a very clean and well-presented image with splashes of colour through the glazed strawberries. I intend to use this technique in my own photography to make my photographs more appealing.
Photographs
My aim within this photo shoot was to display the idea of composition and demonstrate an abstract feel to the images. I planned to do this by positioning the food in different ways and exposing depth of field and a variety of viewpoints.
Edits
To finalize this photo shoot, inspired by Hillary, I chose to edit the photographs to bring out the detail within the image. A range of these photographs display depth of field in the way that the main focus if on the subject matter. This is evident as the subject stands out of the image and the background compliments this as it is out of focus. The screen shots demonstrate the process of selecting a certain part of the image and changing the colour to make the subject matter of the image stand out and become more abstract due to the rest of the picture remaining black and white.
Nickolas Muray
Nickolas Muray Analysis
Nickolas Muray’s evocative, soft focus style of portrait photography became a sensation. He was photographing everybody that was anybody: actors, dancers, film stars, politicians, and writers. As he grew more successful, he held Wednesday night soirees in the studio for friends and acquaintances to meet, eat, and drink.
This picture was taken by Nickolas Muray and is very abstract looking. The image is very well put together and he has thought of composition when presenting it as the picture consisted of 4 different size circular shapes. The lighting in the photograph is very bright and looks artificial as it creates shadows of the objects creating depth within the image. The lighting also compliments the colours as they are not very bright and show reflection on the objects making the photograph more eye catching and more realistic.
The photograph looks quite old due to the old colours and old crockery giving it a retro and abstract feel. This was a reason I was first attracted to this photograph as I thought it was simple but effective due to the unique way it has been set out.
I will use inspiration from this photograph in my own photography as it is simple but positioned together to create different shapes, shadows and abstract effects.

Photographs
I planned to take photographs using a more abstract effect by having the food dripping or being spilt. This makes the picture more eye catching and bold because of the colours and shadows. I had the idea of taking around 50 photographs of the food dripping or on a knife to expose composition and an abstract feel.
Edits
I have edited these photographs to enhance the bright colour and the reflection of light on the baked beans. I feel this was successful as I increased the contrast and the brightness of the image to capture every detail and light and shade. This then gave a 3D effect and made the image more realistic in the way that it stands out and has a bold colour.
In these screenshots, it is evident that I have adapted the contrast and brightness of the photographs to enhance the tone and shade of the image. This then allows the light to reflect and create a shine effect that highlights the image. The contrast gives the picture depth due to the dark shadows the bring the subject matter of the image forward.
Final Development
To finalise my project of food, I have decided to select my most successful photographs from each photo shoot and combine them to create an effective final piece. in order to produce this, I felt that I had a large variety of successful photographs from each of my photo shoots inspired by different photographer. To enhance and develop this, I decided to combine individual images from separate or the same photo shoot and used them in a way that they would compliment each other effectively. I found that may of my photographs were taken using composition which displayed varied shapes which means the photos worked well together. I had the idea of overlaying these similar shapes and adjusting them to form an abstract effect.
I explored my final piece further to develop the most successful outcome by taken photographs from my previous projects that I felt would benefit and compliment these photographs. I chose to develop my project in this way as I believe that each of my photo shoots had successful out comes especially using compositional skills and I felt that this would be beneficial to produce a more successful final piece.
