Inge Morath Analysis
Ingeborg
Hermine "Inge" Morath was an Austrian-born photographer. In 1953, she
joined the Magnum Photos Agency, founded by top photographers in Paris, and
became a full photographer with them in 1955.
This
photograph is an example that I feel influences disguise very well. Inge worked
with an artist called Saul Steinberg for this photo shoot and I feel his style
of art work was affective in her photography and to represent the disguise
theme.
Parts
of this photograph are very natural and look a bit like a family photo but each
person in the image has some kind of mask on their face. Each mask is different
which creates an abstract affect and could show character. The image has been
edited to black and white and is quite dark which could demonstrate a high
level of contrast. This is effective because it allows the detail of the masks
to stand out. As the picture has been taken indoors, the lighting is most
likely artificial to capture all the detail and make the image clearer.
I
like this photograph as it is abstract but still includes natural life
elements. The photograph looks like a normal family picture but has been
adapted and recreated as an abstract, disguise image by use of a variety of
masks. From looking at this image, I have learnt that the theme “disguise” can
be interpreted by taking a casual photo and adding something like a mask to
make a new and interesting photograph. This could influence my own photography
in the way that I will take a normal photograph but add unusual objects to
create a disguise effect.
I
have started to take photographs inspired and influenced by Inge Morath
following the disguise theme. Although, I have adapted and developed these
techniques and interpreted them using a more up to date disguise other than
abstract paper bags. There is an obvious contrast between the model and the
eyes on the screen which develops and represents the theme of Disguise.
Editing
I feel that these photographs will be affective when editing as I have captured many different angles to create an abstract affect. Editing the
color and contrast would develop these further. I have increased the contrast to enhance the detailing in the image and changed it to black and white to show shading and create tone in the image.

Richard Burbridge
Richard
Burbridge Analysis
Richard
Burbridge is one of the top 5 fashion photographer on the market. Richard
transforms his subjects: fashion, portraiture, beauty, and still life
photography in to abstract and interesting images.
This
photograph was taken by Richard Burbridge, the theme of this photograph is
“Strange Masks”. It creates a very abstract effect as the rest of the photograph is very natural. This image looks like it was taken using artificial lighting as certain parts of the image are lighter which highlights them and enhances the darker detailing.
I like this photograph as it is very simple and looks like a normal portrait but is created in to a abstract image with use of an abstract mask. I will use inspiration from this photograph in my own photography in the way that I will take a natural photo and create an abstract effect with use of a mask or object.
Edits
I feel these images were very successful when editing and really represented the theme of disguise well by enhancing the image to create tone and expose further detail. The close us angles are also affective to also show detail and show different lighting and shading.
Irving Penn
Irving Penn Analysis
This image was taken and published on August 20th 2013.
Irving Penn takes a variety of close up photographs of faces and then proceeds to edit them to create an abstract disguise effect. Se takes an ordinary close up photograph of a natural face and often edits them to black and white and increases the contrast to enhance the tone and detail.
In this photograph, Irving Penn has taken a simple photograph and added a black strip of what looks like face paint across the eyes which blacks them out. it also fades out towards the cheek bones which gives a more textured and abstract feel. The white background enhances the tone of the image and the black and white effects exposes detail and shading on the body.
I like this photograph as the editing exposes a lot of detail from a simple photograph and stands out. I was drawn to this image as it represents the disguise theme well and I have used inspiration from Irving Penn's work in my photo shoots.

Triptych
Irving Penn
I have opted for these three photographs inspired by Irving Penn as I feel they were most effective and exposed the disguise theme with success. Also I feel that the editing of these images came to an affective outcome as they compliment each other with different shading and contrasts.
Inge Morath
These three photographs were inspired by Richard Burbridge and I have selected them from my photo shoot as I feel they were the most effective outcomes and worked well together. They compliment each other as there is used of the fan disguise in each image but used in different ways.
Final Triptych
For this project, I decided to explore the theme of Disguise as I found the idea very interesting and thought the outcome would be successful and affective. I took three photo shoots inspired by; Irving Penn, Inge Morath and Richard Burbridge. I feel that my most successful outcome was inspired by Richard Burbridge as my photo shoot represented a unique idea but very affective. These photographs gave a very eye catching and abstract affect after editing and I have chosen three that I feel complimented each other and were most successful.

Evaluation
For this project I opted to follow the theme of Disguise as after research seemed very interesting and I felt that I could present a successful outcome with the initial ideas that I had. I chose three photographers who I feel portrayed the theme of disguise well and used inspiration to produce my photoshoots. To do this I explored the work of; Inge Morath, Irving Penn and Richard Burbridge.
I developed the idea of wearing a mask or covering certain parts of the face but creating a unique idea inspired by Inge Morath. My idea was to incorporate technology by using an IPod which was held in front of the models eyes and presented Barbie eyes for example to portray the disguise theme. This was affective as I used different eyes and positioned the model to represent the characteristics of that disguise. When editing these images, I found that the disguise used exposed light and created darker and more shaded details within the photograph. So, to enhance this, I selected the eyes to maintain the colour and the remains of the image, I changed to black and white to allow the image to stand out and show further detail. Also, I increased the contrast and brightness to enhance and develop the detail of the disguise and present a tone to the image.
My next photoshoot was inspired by the work of Richard Burbridge who I feel created an abstract theme of disguise with in his work which was affective and influenced me to incorporate it in to my own photography. I experimented with use of face paint and props which I found affective and followed the then I had chosen. I feel this photo shoot was most successful and was the best final outcome.
I was then influenced by the work of Irving Penn who also showed a theme of disguise in her photography. I portrayed ideas and inspiration from her work in to mine with use of close ups of faces showing expressions and use of a mask. I feel this shoot was good as it was a simple photograph made abstract with use of a mask and a background that complimented the images.
I have recorded my ideas on my own website, presenting all my photos and information on each photographer and my inspiration. I have shown this by using a clear and organised presentation for other to view. I developed all my ideas and created a personal response to give reason for my work and ideas. My most successful final outcome was inspired by Richard Burbridge as my photographs were most affective and portrayed the theme of disguise well.
Over all, I am satisfied with the final outcome and feel I have progressed well throughout with developing unique ideas and creating my own successful outcome in response to the project.
